This project successfully blends modern architectural elements with a deep sense of cultural identity, creating a unique and personal living space.
The project involved a comprehensive refurbishment, extension, and reconfiguration of a single-family home in Highbury. Our design introduced a substantial rear ground-floor extension while also preparing the structure for a future basement and rear dormer.
The existing house contained dilapidated ground-floor extensions that created a series of disjointed, dark spaces. We identified this as an opportunity to redefine the ground floor. While the rooms on the upper floors were largely preserved due to the building’s historic nature, the rear extension and ground-floor reconfiguration provided a unique opportunity for architectural intervention.
This is where a striking glass slot was introduced, framed by two distinct metal blades. The glass slot links a newly integrated courtyard to the rear of the home, providing a continuous flow of natural light. This design ensures uniform lighting throughout the ground floor, creating a seamless connection between the principal living spaces.
We were fortunate to work with the highly skilled builders from All Struct Construction, whose expertise was instrumental in bringing this vision to life. The interior design, developed by or_studio in close collaboration with the clients, features a carefully curated material palette. This collaboration resulted in an eclectic design that celebrates the clients’ South-East Asian heritage and traditions.
